Writing has long been an interest of mine, a change of pace from painting, but one with some similarities. The craftsmanship of writing is not unlike building a picture - one is forced to organize and discard. My column, "From Behind the Easel" was published in Wildlife Art magazine from 1986 to 2000, when at a cocktail party, I offered to write one for publisher Bob Koenke and surprisingly he accepted. Soon after the onset of Canine Images, my "Brush’s Point" began in that periodical as well, only to have the magazine discontinue publishing after less than a dozen issues. Currently, the column “Abbett on Art” in Sporting Classics was initiated by Editor Chuck Wechsler in the fall of 2004. Like those before him Chuck gives me a freedom which is just short of carte blanche. Our aim on these pages is to keep a variety of subjects available which will hopefully be both instructive and entertaining.
